    What is Airdrop?

An airdrop is a distribution of free tokens to selected wallets, usually to reward early users of a product, seed a community or promote a launch, with the tokens arriving directly in recipients' wallets.

Also known as: token airdrop · airdropped tokens · retroactive airdrop

    In plain terms

An airdrop is free money in token form: the project sends tokens to wallets that meet some criteria — early users, active traders, community members — without requiring payment.

Recipients often must claim the tokens within a window, and many airdrops vest over time rather than arriving all at once.

    How it works

The project defines eligibility — for example wallets that used a protocol before a certain date — takes a snapshot of the blockchain, and allocates tokens per wallet.

Distribution happens through a claim page, direct transfers or vesting contracts. Claiming may require a small gas fee and, increasingly, verification steps to filter bots.

Recipients' selling behavior matters: large airdrops to many small wallets distribute pressure, while a few large recipients can move the price on claim day.

    Example

Hypothetical: a DeFi protocol airdrops 5% of supply to wallets that used it in its first year. Each qualifying wallet receives tokens vesting over 12 months; after the claim opens, trading volume spikes as early users partially sell their allocations.

Why it matters for founders and investors

Airdrops are a core distribution and marketing tool in Web3 and a major source of initial circulating supply, so they are a key input in any tokenomics analysis.

For recipients, airdrops can carry tax obligations at receipt or sale depending on jurisdiction — free tokens are rarely free of consequences.

    Common misconceptions

Legitimate airdrops never ask you to send tokens or pay to receive them. Requests like that are phishing; real airdrops only need your address or a claim action.

Receiving an airdrop does not mean the token will have value: many airdropped tokens trade down heavily as recipients sell immediately.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I know if an airdrop is legitimate?

Check the announcement on the project's official channels, verify the claim URL, and remember that no legitimate airdrop requires sending funds or entering your seed phrase.

    Are airdropped tokens taxable?

In many jurisdictions yes — often as income at receipt or as a taxable event at disposal, depending on local rules. Recipients should track the fair value at receipt and consult a local tax professional.
